According to Greek mythology, after years being held against their will in Crete, Icarus and his father, the master craftsman Daedalus, attempted to escape the island on wings made from feathers and wax. Their plan was working until the young, naïve Icarus flew too close to the sun. His wings melted and he fell to his untimely death—a consequence of his overconfidence.
